Wharram Percy

The Early Anglo-Saxon Farms

The earliest Anglo-Saxon village was probably just a scattering of small houses. There seems to be few, if any, fixed boundaries or planning. Anglo-Saxon farmers at Wharram Percy most likely used the earlier Roman farms; most of the Roman sites at Wharram have produced Anglo-Saxon materials. A number of pit huts -- Grubenhausen -- have been found near the north manor site. One of these huts -- owned by an 8th c. owner -- had French pottery and an ivory comb. An Anglo-Saxon smithy was found behind the 12 c. manor house.

No evidence of an Anglo-Saxon church has been found. A fragment of an Anglo-Saxon cross was found; it is assumed that villagers worshiped around it as a free-standing cross.
