Mario Lancioni Named NJAC Player of the Week
Jon Greene Named NJAC Player of the Week
Head Coach Gerry Matthews Earns 400th Career Victory
Greene & Lancioni Named to NJAC All-Conference Team
Lancioni Named to NABC Atlantic District Second Team

The Stockton men’s basketball team achieved a level of success in 2006-07 that bodes well for a team with no seniors on the roster. The Ospreys finished with a 19-10 overall record after a campaign that included a runner-up finish in the ECAC Metro tournament and another milestone for head coach Gerry Matthews. In his 21st season, Matthews collected his 400th victory at Stockton with an 80-50 win over Rutgers-Camden on January 31.

Mario Lancioni and Jon Greene were the mainstays of the Stockton lineup. Greene averaged 13.3 points per game, led the NJAC in field goal percentage (.583) and finished third in the league in rebounds (9.1 rpg). Lancioni ranked second in the league in assists (4.0 apg) and fourth in three-point field goal percentage (.368) while also scoring 13.1 points per game.

Jerome Hubbard joined the team in January as a transfer and injected his offensive talent by averaging 17.2 points per game. Joe Albano had a breakthrough season, leading the NJAC in free throw percentage (.921) and finishing fifth in assists (3.8 apg). Chad Davis emerged as a solid role player upon entering the starting lineup in January and Derrick Williams gave the Ospreys solid minutes off the bench throughout the year.

Stockton opened the season with three consecutive wins before stumbling to just two victories in its next seven games. A 59-51 win over Alfred snapped a three-game skid and ignited a seven-game winning streak. One game after the run ended, a dramatic 93-83 overtime triumph over Rowan set the stage for Matthews’ latest coaching milestone. The 80-50 rout of Rutgers-Camden gave Matthews victory number 400 and sparked a four-game winning streak.

The Ospreys dropped their regular season finale at Rowan and their NJAC tournament first-round game against Rutgers-Newark. Relegated to the sixth seed for the ECAC Metro tourney, Stockton gamely won on the road at third-seeded Old Westbury and second-seeded New Jersey City before falling to top-seeded NYU in the ECAC Metro finals. The Ospreys ended their solid season at 19-10 overall.

Lancioni and Green each were named to the NJAC All-Conference Second Team, while Lancioni also was voted to the NABC Atlantic District Second Team. Each player was named the NJAC Player of the Week once during the season. Greene also tied for 43rd in the nation in field goal percentage and ranked 52nd nationally in rebounds.
