Sharon Davis-
Women's Soccer
|
Sharon
Davis is a junior defensive back on the Women’s Soccer team.
She started all 23 games this season. Sharon has been suffering
from an injury known as Exertional
Compartment Syndrome in both lower legs. This may cause pain
in the lower legs, numbness and tingling in the feet, and ultimately
compromise an athlete’s ability to perform. Sharon has been
dealing with this problem since she was a freshman and opted to
have a surgical procedure known as a Fasciotomy on both legs on
November 22, 2005 by Dr. Raikin at the Rothman Institute.
Sharon first came into the Athletic Training Room on October 1,
2004 for this injury. We began to do rehab with her that included
icing, proprioception and stretching. We also needed to limit the
amount of time she was able to practice. After her freshman season,
Sharon rested from impact activity for 12 weeks. During her Sophomore
season, Sharon completed the same rehab as her freshman year, but
her symptoms continued to persist and worsen. She also suffered
a right foot sprain during this year that was rehabed.
After
the soccer season ended, she saw Dr. Raikin at the Rothman Institute.
On November 22, 2005 she had bilateral anterior and lateral compartment
fasciotomy. On December 6, 2005 she returned to the athletic training
room to begin her rehab. We began with non weight bearing exercises
that included active range of motion in dorsiflexion, plantarflexion,
inversion and eversion. Our goal for the remainder of the semester
was to increase range of motion. Sharon completed this phase of
her rehabilitation at home over the winter break. When she returned
on January 19, 2006 she had full range of motion and our goal was
to increase the strength in both of her lower legs. We progressed
to weight bearing exercises including the airex and wobble board
for proprioception and used therabands to increase strength.
Sharon received her clearance to return to sport with no restrictions
on March 24, 2006. She completed her rehab in early April and also
trained with the team during the Spring season. She played the fall
season with no pain in either leg. She has proved to be a standout
defender and earned NJAC All-Conference Second Team accolades. "We
were really surprised how easily Sharon came back from this surgery.
To her credit she did a great job with her rehab and followed her
surgeon's guidelines very closely." commented Jon Heck, MS,
ATC, Coordinator of Atheletic Training. |
