Baumgartner Works Her Way Back from Shoulder Injury

Melissa Baumgartner was ready to play in the Softball opening game in Florida during Spring Break. Baumgartner is a junior 3B/1B that hit .310 and played in 29 games for the Ospreys in 2007. During the summer of 2007 she injured her shoulder in a summer softball league. She was diagnosed with a shoulder slap tear and internal impingement. Her orthopedist thought her injury could be treated conservatively with rest and rehab. She started rehab at home at a local physical therapy clinic.

Melissa began rehab with Stockton Athletic Training Services in September when she returned to school. The injury kept her out of full participation in the fall as she completed a graduated throwing protocol. She completed over 60 rehab sessions on her shoulder since September to make sure she was ready for the spring season. In her first game back she was 2-4 with two RBI, but unfortunatley strained her hamstring in the next game. This caused her to miss the remainder of the games in Florida. "Melissa did a great job with her shoulder rehab. But right now we're focusing on her hamstring and hoping to have ready to play on Saturday 3/29/08." commented, Jon Heck, MS, ATC, Coordinator of Athletic Training. Melissa will continue rehab 3 times per week for the remainder of the semester on her shoulder while also rehabbing her hamstring.
