About This Text
The students enrolled in Introduction to Literary Research, Spring 2006, have collaborated to create this hyptertext edition of Catharine Maria Sedgwick's "Slavery in New England," an essay written in 1853 for Bentley's Miscellany (34) about the life of Elizabeth Freeman (also known as Mum Bett), the African American woman whose suit for freedom helped bring about the end of slavery in Massachusetts. The version of the essay used to create this project can be found on the website of the Catharine Maria Sedgwick Society (http://www.salemstate.edu/imc/sedgwick/online_texts.html), and is reproduced here with permission.~Deborah Gussman
