This site was created by Professor Gussman's Literature Research classes of the Fall 2005 semester. On this site you will find an Annotated work of Mary Rowlandson's The Soveriegnty and Goodness of God, along with an Introduction to the work and essays regarding Literary Expressionism in Puritan New England, The Genre of Captivity Narratives, and the Wampanoag Federation. The original publication of this narrative was in 1682. This is a written account of her captivity by the Indians during Metacom's War. This book was the first of its kind, and introduced us to a new genre. "It is a powerful rendering of a cross cultural encounter under the most trying and extreme of circumstances, in which the protagonist/author finds the very boundaries of her cultural identity being tested." (Salisbury ix) Our site includes the removes of the story, along with annotations from the students of Literature Research classes. We hope our annotations bring a perspective to Mary Rowlandson's written events and thoughts that will help others to see why this narritive created such a wave in literary history.
