Sibimet Invidia Vindex
All Vices but Envy take their rise from some
Appearance of Good, or the Pleasure; on the contrary, this proceeds from
an inward Grief and Dissatisfaction at the good of another. Other Vices
their Punishment follows, this it even preceeds. Envy sooner exerts its
Fury upon its own Bowels, than on the Honor
of its Neighbor. 'Tis the shadow of Virtue; he that would avoid that, must
fly the light of this. The Owls Sight being by Nature strong enough to
bear the Suns Rays, is probable the reason other Birds hate and envy her:
Whereas would She be confined to her private Places, and conceal her Self,
she need not fear their Persecutions. Between Equals there's seldom
Emulation; when one's Fortune the others Envy encreases. Men are naturally
apt to look with an ill Eye on
anothers Happiness, and desire to reduce the Fortunes of none more than
those whom they have once seen upon the Level with themselves. Envy is
like the Tare which never seizes
Corn till it be considerably grown and its Fruit begins to ripen. He must
therefore fly Fame, Dignities, and honourable Employments, that would not
be exposed to Envys Darts. Envy is the Sting of Virtue; as the Thorn
preserves the Rose so does that Virtue. This would easily be neglected,
were there none malicious and detracting, Many has Emulation advanced, many
Envy made happy. The Emulation of
Carthage raised the Roman Glory, as that of Francis, King of France, did the Fame of the Emperor
Charles the Fifth. There's nothing better
|
in this Case than Scorn, and being always the endeavoring to mount higher till the
envious Man's Eyes fail him, and he loses sight of You. The Shadow of the
Earth reaches the moon, the lowest of the Celestial Orbs, so near
the Element, and overcasts its Splendor; the higher Planets it does not in
the least injure: The Force of the Sun, when at height, scatters and
dispels Clouds. Where's great Inequality, there's no room for Envy, and
consequently this is the only remedy against it. The more expeditiously a
Man justly advances himself, the less will he be exposed to Envy. No Smoak
comes from a Fire soon lighted. Whereas, while Merits wrestle, as it were,
with one another, Envy grows and takes up Arms against the Person
preferr'd.
All other Monsters Hercules tamed; against this neither
Force nor Obligations were to any purpose. Nothing can silence some
Peoples Clamours; for whatever Favours you Confer, they take for Debts;
nay, always promise to themselves greater then they receive. Obloquy and Detraction
ought not to quench in any Person the Desire of Glory, nor Deter him from
executing his Enterprizes: Dogs bark at the Moon, but She easily dispises
them, and proceeds in her Course. The principal Art in our Conduct is to
be able to endure Envy, since it generally enflames Virute and makes it
more illustrious; especially, if the Person be Just and Constant, and
don't too easily give credit to Calumnies.
Amsterdam, April 4. It is advis'd from Genoa of the 15th Instant That 1000 German
Troops arrived at St. Peter d'Atena,
|
to embark for Corsica, and the Prince of
Wirtemburg, who is to command the Imperial Troops in that Island, who also
arrived from Milan; in the mean time, the War in Corsica continues to be
attended with great Desolation, the Malecontents having passed the
Mountains, and burnt and plundered the Country
about Olmia; and on the other Hand, General Arnau at the same Time marched
from Appacio with a Body of Horse and Foot and
attacked by way of Diversion the Town of Pastellico, burnt divers Houses which were
filled with Corn, and returned back with a Booty of above 100 Cattle.
Hague, April 4. Prince Catimir de Valachia, Minister from the
Czarina to the King of
Great Britain, arrived here the 2d Instant, and sat out this Afternoon to
embark at Rotterdam for London. Count Kinski is arrived here from Paris,
on his Way to Vienna. We have Advice here of the Death of the Duke of Saxe Gotha, and the
Hereditary Prince of Baden Durlach.
Paris, April 9. They write from Rome, that the 13th past the
Duke de St. Aignau, the French Ambassador arrived there. We learn from Meaux, that there is an
epidemical Distemper in two Villages
near that City, which they call the Sweating Sickness, whereof
65 Persons have died in two days, those who are seized therewith dying
within 24 Hours; and 'tis pretended that this Sickness was occasioned by
the burning of a Cloud over those two Villages, with much Thunder and
Hail.
Berlin, March 12. N.S. Yesterday the whole Court received Orders
to be in the late King's Apartments by Six o'Clock in the Evening. The
Duke of Lorrain was there in a very rich Habit: His Royal Highness seemed
under some sort of Surprize at the Magnificence of the Furniture, the
Beauty of the Pictures, and all the Riches he saw in those Apartments, the
two great Halls whereof were illuminated with Wax Candles without Number.
The King and Queen came thither at Half an Hour
after Six: Their Majesty's were accompanied by the Prince Royal and the
other Princes and Princesses of the Royal Family, and also by the Duke and
Dutchess of Beveren, and the prince
and princess their Eldest Son and Daughter. Immediately after, a large
Circle was formed round that August Company, which being done the Prince
Royal advanced towards the Princess of Beveren, and presented her with a
Ring valude at 24000 Crowns, and the Princess gave him another valued at
about 10000 Corwns: After this Ceremony, which is that of the Betrothing the whole Court
and the Foreign Minister Complimented the Prince and Princess, their
Majesties, the Duke and the Dutches of Beveren, &c. and their
Majesties embraced the Prince Royal with a great deal of Tenderness. The
Count de Schulenbourg Major General, was immediately dispatched to Vienna,
to carry the News to the Empress, the Bethrothed Princess's Aunt; and Col.
Derschan was sent at the same time to notify it to the Duke and Dutchess of
Brunswick |
Wolfenbuttle, that Princess's Grandfather and Grandmother. This
done, they began to Dance in four Quadrilles; The Prince
Royal and the Princess of Beveren opened the Ball, and after they had
danced some time, they placed themselves at a figured Table, at which sat
300 Persons: The Repast was extreamely
magnificent. and served up in Gilt Plate. After Supper, the Ball was
revived, which lasted till past Two o'Clock in the Morning. The King was
in a Humour that shewed the Satisfaction he had in the Conclusion of this
Alliance: His Majesty embraced the Prince Royal several times, as also the
Princess of Beveren, to whom he had the day before sent Presents of
Jewels, Stuff, and Laces to the
Value of 50,000 Crowns.
Leith,
March 8. The 6th Instant came in a Vessel
from Orkney, with Beef, Pork,
&c. Gray; also a Vessel from Lewis, with Herrings,
Morison: She is about 32 Tons, all her Sails are Wooden Tartan Plaids, and
her Reef-points, and other Tackling of twisted Worsted.
Edinburgh, March 9. On Monday last, one John Buchanan, of
Perthshire, was taken up and committed to the City Jail, by Warrant of the
Hon. Justices of the Peace of this Shire; upon the petition of one Rachel
Mac-Queen, Residenter in Edinburgh, setting forth, That John Buchanan
aforesaid had long courted the Petitioner in Edinburgh, setting forth,
that John Buchanan aforsaid had long courted the Petitioner under Promise
of Marriage, and that she, confiding in his repeted Promises, and that he
had actually appointed a certain Day for the Ceremony, had thrown up her
Service; but that, when she came according to his Appointment before the
Minister, (who also had come there at his Desire) he the said Buchanan
went off abruptly, and refused to solemnize the Marriage; whereby the
Petitioner was now deprived of every Means of Subsistence, Therefore
praying, &c. Buchanan is bailed to answer to the Facts above set
forth.
Rochester, March 18. Yesterday the Trial of William Ragley for
the Murder of Elizabeth, his Wife, by shooting her, came on. It appear'd,
that in December last he came, and bid his Wife make his Bed; upon which
she made Answer, that she would not make it for him, nor his Dog of a Boy,
and call'd him Sodomitical Dog; on which
he took a Gun which was loaded with Shot, and shot her in the
Breast, of which Wound she languished for a Week, and died. The Murder
being plainly proved, the Jury brought him in Guilty,
L O N D O N, March 18.
Last Thursday an Universal Dial was
communicated to the Royal Society by on Mr. Ross from Worcestershire. It
does not exceed seven Inches in Diameter, and yet shows the Time of Day to
a Minute, as well when the Sun but Just appears thro' a Cloud or thick
Mist, as when it actually shines out: It shows the Time of Night by
several fix'd Stars, mention'd upon a Seale contriv'd for that
Purpose
|
and are as readily distinguish'd one from
another by any Person that knows nothing of Astronomy as by those that are
ever to familiar with it. It shows the Day of the Month, the Declination
of any Star or Planet: It takes any Angle as well as a Theodolite, and in short
answers all that a Globe is capable of: It may likewise be set in an
Instant to the Meridian and Latitude of the Place, and
may be either portable or fix'd.
On Monday last a poor Woman being in a Dust Cart in Bishopsgate-Street, and
very much intoxicated with Liquor, fell out of it, and the Cart going over
her, killed her upon the Spot. The same Day in the Afternoon, a young Lad
about five Years old, was unfortunately run over by a Geatleman's Coach,
in Monmouth-Street, and died on the Spot; the Coachman perceiving the
Accident, and jumping hastily off the Coach-Box, to take up the
Child, broke his Leg. The Gentleman's Coach and Horses were seized, who,
'tis said, told them, they were welcome to them, if that could make
Satisfation, and that he would freely give 5 Hundred Pounds, if the
Child's Life might be saved, and gave Directions where he was to be found.
A Surgeon was immediately sent for to bleed the Body, but to no
Purpose.
March 20. On Saturday last, a very curious Stained Window was
put up in the South-East Window of St. Andrew's Church,
Holbourn, to the Memory of John Thavie, Esq; a great Benofactor thereto;
which was performed by Mr. Price, and esteemed as an inimitable Piece,
being judged to exceed any thing of that kind.

Kent, and this Morning he sets out for East Grimstead in Sussex, to hold
the Assizes there for the
County of Sussex, which begun this day.
March 21. The Mail due from Holland came in last Might. It confirms what is
said of the the Count de Bonneval, who
is a professed Turk, by the Name of
Achmet Bey. They write from Italy, that is the general Opinion
there, that the Spaniards are going to
Corsica. They add, that there are not so few as 12,000 Spaniards in the
little Island of Elba upon the Coast of
Tuscany. A fine Nursery to supply the Deficiencies, by Death or Desertion,
in the Corps of 6000 landed at Leghorn by Agreement.
Yesterday his Majasty went to the House of Peers, and
being in his Royal Robes seated on the Throne with the usual Solemnity,
Sir Charles Dalton, Gentleman-Usher of the Black Rod, was sent with a
Message from his Majesty to the House of Commons, commanding their
Attendance in the House of Peers: The Commons being come there
accordingly, his Majesty was pleased to give the Royal Assent to the
following Acts, viz. For Mutiny and Desertion; for rebuilding Woolwich
Church, and a Bill concerning Messieurs Robinson and Thompson, relating to
the Charitable Corporation Affairs.

On Monday last was buried the Corps of Mr. Hays, who had receiv'd
above 20 Wounds (4 of which were mortal) from a worst than barbarous
Husband. She was big with Child when the execrable Villain
perpetrated the bloody and unnatural Fact, and the Child in the Womb received several
Stabs which kill'd it before it came into the World. The Jury brought in
both Verdicts wilful Murder.

a late Instruction from his Majesty, to pass any Law imposing a Duty upon

We have the following remarkable Account from Hatfield, That in a
Storm the 23d of last Month, the Lightning struck a House about 4 or 5
Miles from the Town, call'd the Straits, which broke the Chimney, broke a
Bottle at the head of a Cradle wherein a Child lay, and kill'd a Hen just
by it, and another in the Window, two Sheep were kill'd at one Door of the
House, and a Calf close by the other;
all the House was fill'd with Flame. The Man himself was out, his Wife and
three Children in the Room were all mercifully preserved.
We hear from Exeter that on Tuesday last, two Lads of about 13 Years of
Age went out with their Guns to kill some Birds, one named Samuel
Scribener the other William Levit, and while pursuing their Game, Scribener's Flint
fell out of his Gun, and in putting it in again, he shot Levit in his left
Shoulder and carry'd all the back part of his Head away, and he never
spoke after. 'Tis remakable, that this Scribener's Father was kill'd after
the same manner about a Year ago.
New-York, June 26. Wednesday last on board a Ship in this Harbour, late in the
Evening, when all the Ships Crew were on Shore excepting the Carpenter, he
in their Absence cut his Throat with a Knife, and was found at the return
of two of the Sailors, lying bleeding not able to speak, but pointing to
some Words he had wrote on the Deck.
I forgive every Body, as I hope to be forgiven. I
have done this my Self. He was immediately brought ashore; and by the
Assistance of a Doctor, is in a fair Way of living.
