Proud -- Again, this refers to the upper class. The stanza suggests what the country folk did not get at their burial.

They have no elaborate tombs. There are no trophies. They were not carried solemnly down the long-drawn aisle of some impressive cathedral. There was no singing choir. They were buried simply, but that is no shame to them. And as the next stanza suggests, none of these embellishments could have soothed "the dull cold ear of Death" (44).
