struggling pangs -- Note in this stanza how the poetic voice is quite sure that corrupt men have "struggling pangs of conscious truth." The moral underpinnings accepted by Gray and his audience are suggested clearly. With my late twentieth-century perspective, I give this a more cynical reading.
