Curricular OptionsAt Stockton it is possible to earn a Bachelor of Science in Geology, a Bachelor of Arts in Geology, or a Minor in Geology. The main differences between the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees is that in the Bachelor of Science degree more credits are taken in the sciences as opposed to other fields, and there are specific requirements for Calculus and Physics. In the Bachelor of Arts degree, only one semester of Calculus is required, there is no Physics requirement, and there is room for more courses outside of the sciences. Students must also meet the colleges General Education requirement for the BS or the General Education requirement for the BA. Employers and graduate schools do not seem to have a preference for one degree over the other, but they do care what courses you take. Students planning to go to graduate school in Geology should take Calculus and Physics. Students seeking employment in environmental geology should take Soils, Hydrology, and Groundwater Hydrology. Geographic Information Systems courses are of value to graduates moving into any subdiscipline of Geology. topBachelor of Science DegreeTo earn a Bachelor of Science degree requires a total of 128 credits, with 80 credits coming from courses related to the student's major and 32 credits from General Education courses. topBachelor of Arts DegreeTo earn a Bachelor of Arts degree requires a total of 128 credits, with 64 credits coming from courses related to the student's major and 64 credits from General Education courses. topMinor in GeologyStudents who are not able to pursue a degree in geology are strongly encouraged to a minor in geology.
