COURSE REQUIREMENTS  & GRADING

Attendance is required. Missing more than one session will result in a grade of "C" or less. Missing three classes will lead to a grade of "F."

Grading will be based on summaries of each session, written in your own words, and including your own assessment of the quality, relevance and benefits to the environment of the work discussed by the speaker(s). For the first session a simple, 300-500 word summary will suffice. for the last six, 400-600 words (around 1.5-2 double-spaced, 1"-margin pages) is expected. Submit as Microsoft Word attachments to an email to: jamie.cromartie@stockton.edu. PLEASE name all files you send me with the title “your last name title of assignment” as in “Jones session 2” or “smith seminar farming.” Also, be sure your name is in the email and on the summary.

Grammar and Spelling Errors to Avoid:

  • Run-on sentences; sentence fragments.
  • Verb-subject disagreement (mixing up singular and plural.) Pronoun-object disagreement.
  • Switching from tense to tense (past, present or future) when summarizing.
  • Switching between persons (I, you, they, one, etc.) and point of view.
  • Spelling or word confusion ("affect" for "effect," “their” for “there,” “it’s” for “its”) not caught by spell checker.
  • Lack of paragraph breaks when new topics are introduced; topics and ideas out of order
  • Awkward or unclear phrases and sentences; needless repetition; wordiness

Summaries are due before the next session, except for the April 16 summary, which is due April 23. The grades for your five (5) best summaries will be added to get your final score. Grading is on a scale as follows:

10 Outstanding: clear, focused, critical. Shows excellent understanding of the issues discussed. Free of grammatical or spelling errors.
9 Above average
8 Average. Shows adequate understanding of the issues discussed. Mostly clear and free of grammar or spelling errors.
7 Below average
6 Unsatisfactory. Shows little or no understanding of the issues discussed. Lacks clarity, or contains grammatical and spelling errors.
