Transition to Blackboard 9

We are in the process of transitioning from Blackboard CE8 to Blackboard 9.1. There will be many training seminars scheduled throughout the coming semesters. Full adoption will be Summer 2012. Visit http://www.stockton.edu/bbtransition for full details. If you are unable to attend training seminars on campus, many instructional videos are available on our Blackboard Support page. Blackboard 9 is accessible via the goStockton portal, My Courses channel (on the Faculty Tab and Student Services) tab. Log in with portal username and password.

Transition to Blackboard Collaborate

Blackboard recently purchased the Wimba Live Classroom and Elluminate products. Both of these products enable synchronous online meeting and instruction. Blackboard is merging these products into a single product name Blackboard Collaborate. We are in teh process of transitioning from Wimba Classroom to Blackboard Collaborate. Full adoption will be Summer 2013. Visit http://www.stockton.edu/bbtransition for full details.

Blackboard Video Uploads

Do you give video assignments to your students? Do you create instructional videos for your students to view? We have developed a new module for Blackboard to facilitate the upload and management of video clips and student video assignments. It is imperative that you use this system for video uploads. Blackboard is not designed to act as a video server and large files, especially large video files, place a heavy strain on the system. For assistance, contact Dan Gambert.

One Username, One Password

Single sign-on is now a part of the Stockton computer labs. Students are now able to log in to computers in our labs with their goStockton portal username and password. This has significant advantages for the students. They will be able to store and retrieve personal files (up to 250 MB). They will also have the ability to set up an individual user profile with computer settings unique to the individual. This is especially important for students in our Learning Access program who may need special accessibility settings or software.

Printing in the Computer Labs

The advent of user logins in the computer labs allows us to manage printing. For details on how printing is managed, please visit
http://intraweb.stockton.edu/eyos/page.cfm?siteID=39&pageID=106

Blackboard CE8 Loading Content

Importing content into a live Blackboard CE section is very easy -- just a few mouse clicks. Instructions are available at Loading Content into your live Blackboard CE6 Section. Be sure to print out your "My Blackboard" page first before you begin. It will be very helpful in choosing the correct section to copy.

Blackboard CE8 or Bb9 Development Section Request

Live course sections are created for you 3-4 weeks prior to the beginning of each semester. If you wish to begin work on creating content for an upcoming semester you can request a development section. Use the online request form to request "development" sections. Go to the Computer & Telecommunication Services homepage at http://compserv.stockton.edu and look for the Bb logo.

Development sections are used to create content for a new course or store content from a previously offered course that may be offered again in the future. Unlike "live" course sections that are deleted each year -- Fall course sections the following May, Spring and Summer course sections the following January -- development sections remain on the system for as long as you are at Stockton. A confirmation email will be set to you after the development section is created.

Development sections can also be "reset" (i.e., have content removed and set to have new content copied in). To request a development section reset, send an email request to Dan.Gambert@stockton.edu or Linda.Feeney@stockton.edu

Contingency Planning for Online Instruction

Every effort is made to avoid disruptions in technology services. The reality is, however, that unexpected disruptions can and will occur (e.g., power outages, Internet servic outages, emergency maintenance). Planning ahead for disuprtions can help reduce your frustration and your students' frustration. For suggestions, please read Contingency Planning for Online Instruciton.

Student Accounts/Usernames

In the past, student usernames followed the convention of the letters "stk" followed by a four or five digit number (e.g., stk45467). With the Fall 2008 implementation of the goStockton Portal and its integration with Banner, the username scheme changed. All usernames -- student and employee -- are now generated by Banner. In general, the username will follow the formula of the first seven letters of the last name and the first initial (i.e., Agnes Jones might have the username "jonesa"). In the case where the default username already exists, digits will be included to create a unique username (i.e., Agnes Jones might be "jonesa7").

E-Classroom Etiquette

If you are using an electronic classroom, we are asking for your assistance in keeping these facilities functioning smoothly for all. We need your help in maintaining the physical security of the equipment and keeping the equipment available and in working condition.

Before you leave the classroom, please be sure to do the following:

1. Turn off the projector -- Projector bulbs have a life of 1000 hours. We have approximately 65 instructional hours per week. If a projector is on for all of the instructional hours, it should last a few weeks longer than a semester. If its is left on beyond 1000 hours, the bulb will need to be replaced sooner -- most likely at the end of the semester which, for the instructional program, is usually the worst possible time. Additionally, replacement bulbs are expensive, around $400 each). Please conserve the bulbs (and electricity). You can also extend bulb life by using the "Black Burst" feature when you are not actively using the projector during instruction.

2. Turn off the wireless mouse -- Depleted batteries will make the wireless mouse useless to the next person using the room. (You never know when you could be "the next person").

3. Return wireless mice and remote controls to the lectern (so the next person can find them).

4. Turn off electronic pen -- In rooms equipped with the StarBoard (most e-classrooms), turn off the electronic pen by clicking the top. Depleted battery will render the Starboard interface inoperable.

5. Lock the lectern (to prevent equipment loss).

If you have any questions, please call the Help Desk at x4309.

Software Installation Requests

If you have instructional software that must be installed in the computer labs or electronic classrooms, please bring it to D-001 as soon as possible. Because the labs are heavily booked, you should allow two weeks for software installation.

The online request form is available on the Computer & Telecommunication Services web site. Go to http://compserv.stockton.edu, click on the "Faculty & Staff" tab, click on the "Forms" button, click on the "Online Forms" link, click on the "Software Installation Request" link.

E-mailing your Classes

In addition to the email features in Banner, class e-mail distribution lists are available. These lists are updated the week before each semester and every other day during the drop/add period. to use this feature, create a message and enter into the "To:" field the class acronym, course number, and section number followed by @stockton.edu.

For example, to mail to the students in CSIS1180-009, you would use:

csis1180009@stockton.edu

These email lists are only accessible from Outlook.

Using this method of communication, you may occasionally receive and email message informing you the "Delivery has failed to these recipients or distribution lists." If one or more of your students has set up forwarding to an outside mail system and there is a mistake in the forwarding address, your will receive this delivery error message. Although students may forward their Stockton mail to an outside mail source, this practice is discouraged. The College cannot guarantee delivery once forwarding is set.

You may also receive a similar mess age if one or more of your students has a full mailbox. Student mailbox quotas are electronically scanned each business day. If a student has a full mailbox s/he will receive an individual phone call from our office advising him/her of this issue and urging him/her to clean up the mailbox so important messages will not be missed.

For details on using the the email feature on your Banner class lists, see the item about Stockton QuickMail below.

E-mailing your Preceptees

Preceptee e-mail distribution lists are updated the week before each semester and every other day throughout the drop/add period. The list name is derived from your portal username followed by -advise@stockton.edu.

For example, professor John Doe would send a message to doej-advise@stockton.edu

These e-mail lists are available only from Outlook.

Stockton QuickMail

The email method used by Banner requires a specific mail client setup. Campus computers are already configured for this, but home computers may not be.

You can solve this problem by installing Stockton QuickMail. This program will allow you to send email from your browser and receive a copy of you message in your Stockton Inbox. This utility may be used by any member of the Stockton community with an active email account.

For an FAQ, intstructional video, and installation files, visit http://intraweb.stockton.edu/eyos/page.cfm?siteID=39&pageID=8 and scroll to the bottom of the page.

Online Appointment Calendar

A Stockton-customized module has been added to Blackboard to enable you to make appointments with your student online rather than posting a sign-up sheet on your office door. Use this module to create a calendar and a block of time for appointments. Your students can then pull up that appointment block and sign up for an available slot. Click here for documentation.

This Appointment Scheduling module is available for use in any Blackboard section. You might choose to use it, for example, in an instructional section for students to sign up for office hours or group presentations.

Using the Outlook client, you can also overlay this appointment calendar on your Outlook calendar to view all of your appointments in one place.

If you need support in using Blackboard and/or the Appointment Scheduling module, you can contact Dan Gambert (609-626-6828).

Lab Reservation Requests

Computer lab reservations for this semester are processed during the previous semester. If you did not submit a reservation request to your school, a lab may not be available because of heavy lab usage. Limited reservations may be possible for individual dates and class meetings. See Jo Ann Kocher in D-121 to inquire about computer lab availability.

Junk Mail Processing

The Stockton email system receives a huge volume of email massages each day. A large percentage of these messages are unsolicited. Our antispam and antivirus appliances and services regularly check incoming messages and block those that are known to be problematic. Of the approximately 100,000 to 120,000 messages arriving at Stockton each day only about 8,000 to 12, 000 are actually delivered. Despite these measures, it is still possible for some unwanted messages to get through.

Your best approach is to simply delete unsolicited messages, but you can also use the Junk Mail filters built into the Outlook client to supplement the existing protection measures. Please refer to the Dealing with Junk E-mail guide.

Excessive unsolicited messages or those of a particularly troubling nature can be further investigated. Please use the instructions below to forward problem messages. This method provides needed information so that we can refer the problem messages to our service for processing.

Using the Outlook client (not the web version):

1. Create a new message addressed to reportspam@stockton.edu

2. Click on the little envelope icon and drag any message(s) you wish into the body of the new message.
3. Send the message.
